Early-career scientists from all countries of origin and any subject carrying out further research work into the field of environmental protection and nature conservation at a higher education institution in Germany are invited to apply for one of the doctoral scholarships awarded each year. The programme's aim is to support young academics and build an interdisciplinary network of experts on the environment. To this end, the scholarships help finance doctoral theses which clearly address topical environmental protection and nature conservation issues and contribute to developing viable and sustainable solutions in this field. The concept of building support networks promotes active cooperation between the DBU and its alumni.

Topics with international relevance are welcome, but the work must be carried out predominantly in Germany and there must be a clear reference to the environmental situation in Germany or to global environmental tasks. Temporary research stays abroad during the doctoral phase are possible and encouraged.
